If I had kids it might be different cuz they love dressing up and games and all that, but I just see it as nothing.

Nope. I don't have kids so don't see the point of it. It's just another commercial holiday for retailers to make a heap of money imo. Like Christmas: having to spend money I don't have.

Probably the most bizarre encounter with a witness family.
by Dis-Member inwent to a bar with a friend a few days ago.. we were sitting in the outside garden and i went back inside to get another round.
on my way back out i passed some tables with a family of about 6 or 7 people sitting and celebrating a birthday.. i overheard the name jehovah mentioned and i stopped and asked if they were witnesses to which one of them replied 'yes'.. we got into conversation about the latest watchtowers and the governing body.
none of them had a clue what i was talking about.. they new nothing of the 8 men brooklyn being the faithful and discreet slave, nothing about c.t russell or rutherford, nothing of how jesus came and selected them as his chosen people in 1914-19, in fact the only thing they knew about 1914 was that that was when the first world war started, nothing about malawi and mexico, never heard of candace conti or any of the sex abuse scandals, nothing about the 2 witness rule, nothing about the elders being chosen by the holy spirit, nothing about 'new light', nothing about the orgs involvement with the un, nothing about the blood fractions changes they knew almost nothing at all about the majority of their own organisations core teachings.

Why does the doomsday cult of Jehovah's Witnesses cause psychosis and grief
by Watchtower-Free inhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-ouch-24642553.
25 october 2013. colin hambrook is a poet and visual artist with mental health difficulties and me.
he runs disability arts online (dao) a web portal for disabled artists which reviews and showcases their work.. in hambrook's latest autobiographical project, knitting time, he recalls being brought up by a jehovah's witness mother who was mentally ill. she, hambrook and the other jehovah's witnesses they knew, believed that the world was due to end in 1975. this collection of illustrated poetry, and the accompanying art exhibition, explore the psychosis and grief he experienced as a result.. why did you call it knitting time?.

Very interesting article. Glad that guy is doing well despite his setbacks. A real survivor.

So I got engaged...
by frogonmytoe in...to my boyfriend, we're going to have one of those weddings ('gay' weddings to the straights).. although my jw family know i'm gay, and not going to meetings, only one of my sisters has sussed the situation.
but i think after 3 years it's about time i told them.
especially if sometime in the future i'll turn up with a (gay) wedding ring.

Congrats. Marriage is important because it's when you get up in front of all your friends and pledge your love and everyone can celebrate it with you. May you be happy together!!

Treating people differently separates them from each other by creating jealousy, pride and competition and snobbery. Divide and conquer.

ELDERS CAME KNOCKING AT MY DOOR
by wakingup60 inso this is the situation..........haven't been to meeting for the past 10 months....misssed dc as well as 2 day assemblies.. i have woken up to the fact that the watchtower is not god's organization so their is absolutely no way iam going.
to give the elders any of my time.
i have no desire to agree to a sherherding call!.

Yep, same as what's been said. When they come to your door, be busy and say you don't have time to talk, then keep it about the weather or something. Keep away from doctrine or attempts on their part to drag a confession. I told mine I have their numbers n know where the hall is so if I need them I know where to find them. They'll back off for a bit.

The reason behind why the ex-JW community can never match Jehovah's Witnesses' success.
by Stand for Pure Worship inan average of five kingdom halls being constructed daily, almost 8 million brothers and sisters, dissemination of bible literature in 595 languages, 111,795 congregations worldwide, distribution of 179 million bibles available in 116 languages, 239 countries where jehovah's witnesses have a presence, etc.. need i go on?.
on the other hand........... crisis of conscience, freeminds, the awaa, jw.net, ummmmmm........hmmm........idk six screens or something?
not exactly working out for you guys.

The reason the ex jw community isn't having the same success is...they're not trying to...

God has no plan for anyone ever lived?!
by Mr Fool inaccording to jw all people are born by chance and death also come by chance, a lottery.
therefore no one is meant to be.
if god has a plan for certain volume of people (kind of 144 000), how can that be if he has no idea which kind of souls being created (by accident)?.
-
Julia Orwell
If god has a plan for when you will be born and when you will die, why did he used to plan in the medieval times for only one in 5 children to live past the age of 5? Why did he predestine 40% of the world's population to die by hideous plague over a few decades? Why now does he predestine babies to die before they are even born, devastating the families? Better the baby ws never conceived.
And why does god predestine people to die younger and in more horrible ways in poor countries? Or even to be born into a famiy or situation where their short lives will be full of suffering? Does god favour other souls over others, or do all these things happen because life is random and god doesn't have anything to do with it, even if he does exist?
